What a time to be someone who studies video games! When I started down this line of research (~2008) there were very few comprehensive resources in the field – articularly books. Flash forward to today, and there are literally hundreds! However, lately I have noticed a particularly sharp increase in the quality of the books that are coming out in this area (and notably, many are being authored and/or edited by some of the best scholars studies books in the field)!
Here are just some of the ones I have been most excited about:
Moral Combat: Why the War on Violent Video Games is Wrong – Patrick M. Markey & Christopher J. Ferguson
100 Greatest Video Game Characters - Jamie Banks, Robert Meija, & Aubrie Adams (Eds.)
100 Greatest Video Game Franchises – Robert Meija, Jamie Banks, & Aubrie Adams (Eds.)
Internet Addiction in Psychotherapy – Daria Kuss & Mark Griffiths
Also, in case you missed it, I have published a few game studies books farily recently that I am quite proud of:
New Perspectives on the Social Aspects of Digital Gaming:Multiplayer 2 - Rachel Kowert & Thorsten Quandt (Eds.)
The Video Game Debate: Unravelling the Physical, Social, and Psychological Effects of Video Games – Rachel Kowert & Thorsten Quandt (Eds.)
What books are you most looking forward to reading? Are there some great ones I missed from the list? Let me know!
